Amaryllis in a glass pot with fake fur
Amaryllis belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family and is actually called Hippeastrum.
Amaryllis and Hippeastrum are two closely related genera that are often confused
with each other. The biggest difference between them is the stem: the Amaryllis
stem is solid while a Hippeastrum stem is hollow. Hippeus means knight (ridder)
and Astrum means star (ster) and this gives the Dutch name Ridderster (Knight Star).
There are many types and colours of Hippeastrum available now whereas previously
there were generally only red and pink. Almost any colour or form you can think of,
including large flowers, filled flowers, small flowers, butterfly flowers and multiple
flowers have become widely available over the last years.
Amaryllis can tolerate both shadow and a lot of light, the soil should be kept moist and
fertilizing isn’t necessary.
An Amaryllis in a pot can be kept so that it can flower again. The stems should
be removed once flowering has finished and the bulb should be left in the pot and
given water. After 7 months, cut off the leaves, take the bulb out of the pot and
place it somewhere cool and dry at 10-17°C, possibly in a cellar. Let the bulb
rest for about 10 weeks and then repot it. Give the bulb water once more and
keep it at room temperature. The bulb will produce new leaves and then flower
again. Good luck!
Amaryllis in a glass or bowl: Take the bulb out of the pot and rinse it well under
the tap so that the soil is removed from between the roots. Allow it to dry and
then put it in a bowl or glass. The bulb doesn’t need water to start growing.
Amaryllis in the garden: This bulbous plant also does well outside and can be
planted in the garden from the beginning of May. The soil should again be kept
moist for the best results. Make sure that the bulb is in a spot where it doesn’t
get too much wind so the leaves will remain attractive.
Those Amaryllis are proposed in a glass pot with fake fur. The diameter of the pot is 13 cm
and the height of the plants is 20 cm.
